L. W. LEWIS

Author, Writer, Storyteller

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

L. W. Lewis is a retired USAF pilot and navigator. He was assigned to B-52’s during the Viet Nam War and later flew fighters with the Flying Tigers. His goal in writing is to entertain, teach good moral values, and help with reading skills.

L.W. Lewis is known for his charming children’s poetry that often explores themes of nature, imagination, and childhood adventures. His poems typically feature playful language and vivid imagery, making them engaging for young readers. Here are some key aspects of his work:

SCHOOL VISITS

School visits by L. W. Lewis are free. He has performed his poetry at adult comedy clubs and classrooms alike. Adults find humor in his books as do children.

Read what teachers and media specialists have to say:

Both teachers and children enjoyed your visit and were turned on by poetry. Some of my male students found your books to be the best and would keep them in their desks for weeks until I made them return the books because they were overdue and requested by other students.

Kids have gone crazy over your poetry. On Saturday morning they get to choose what they want to read. No contest, your books are always chosen. You have really helped me generate an interest in reading.

Since Mr. Lewis’s visit we have not been able to keep his books in the library. When the books are checked in, someone is inevitably waiting to check it out again.

The humor, real life observations, and “gross them out” language immediately grab students’ attention. And then keeps them both mentally and verbally saying, “ I thought the same thing” and “I wondered about that too”. Your books are already checked out and there is a long list that will keep them circulating throughout the school year. You make loving poetry “cool” and writing it easy.

I pulled together the circulation stats on your books. In the last three months “Why Do Flies Eat Doggy Poop” has been checked out 32 times: Tickle Tree – 26 times; and “Poodles, Tigers, Monsters & You” – 17 times.

I don’t know what you’re doing but keep doing it. Your books are always checked out.

WHY DO FLIES EAT DOGGY POOP

L. W. Lewis has a unique ability to “see” through a childs eyes. His poems talk to children, he is read and remembered. No subject is taboo, from doggy poop to going to college, all as a child views the subject. Humor is in every poem. Some like cheating and smoking use poetry and humor to plant a seed that children remember. Others like “Dog Food” and “My Weight” are just plain funny and keep children turning pages. This book targets 4th grade through adults.. It also good for reluctant readers.

Embark on an extraordinary adventure in dreamland

POODLES TIGERS MONSTERS & YOU

Conundrums and fantasy set to humor. What would happen if a poodle married a tiger, of if you invite a monster to dinner. What about if if a lion married a zebra or your brother went outside naked. Silly stories that pre-k through 6th grade will want to hear over and over again. Lewis does not condescend to children, he tickles their sense of humor. Adults will also enjoy reading these poems to the pre-K set.

Unlock the mystries behind the secret door

THE TICKLE TREE

Outrages humor about every day thoughts and experiences of children. What if a witch was afraid to fly, of if I were a fish. Little thoughts about cutting an onion to big concerns about fear. Why is my sister such a brat? What is the best toilet paper to use? Lewis has a unique style that keeps children laughing and turning pages. Recommended for 3rd through 6th grade readers.

BATHING KITTY

From feeding dog food to a little brother, to destroying each other’s toys, to observing nose-pickers in church, nothing is off-limits in L. W. Lewis’s collection of amusing poetry, Bathing Kitty. Told from the unfiltered perspective of a child, the short, whimsical observations are meant to draw young readers in with entertaining, humorous verses that can help young minds think beyond the nuts and bolts of standard prose. Bathing Kitty blends clever wordplay with easy-to-remember rhymes to help build reading confidence and create verses that are fun to say aloud — again and again! Bathing Kitty covers the spectrum of childhood’s mischievous mayhem, with poems about applying lipstick to the cat, getting bubbles in your butt and eating insects. Intended for audiences from grades 3 through 8, the verses take a serious turn at the end, with The Not-Too-Funny Section, which features three touching tributes to the author’s military legacy and the contributions of our armed forces. Along the way, Lewis manages to sneak in subtle lessons about the importance of having high ideals and good morals — undercurrents that should have an impact yet go unnoticed by all but the most perceptive of children

POOP, BUTT, BOOGER & SNOT

Intended for “reluctant” readers. The title entices a child to open the book. It is funny. Rhymes are easy to read so reading skills improve and reading becomes fun. L. W. Lewis does not “preach” to children, he makes them laugh.
Morals and values are not drummed in but suggested through humor. Whether it’s arguing with a sister, wanting to be an astronaut, or kissing a frog, Lewis explores every day conundrums in a way that children understand and find humorous. Winner of the Moonbeam Children’s Book Award for children’s humorous poetry. It will be read and remembered. A fun read for any child or adult who reads to a youngster.

My granddaughter has all of this author’s previous children’s poetry books and she absolutely loves them! So, when I heard that a new book of poems was being published, I just knew that I had to get it for my granddaughter! We first started reading his other books together when she was only 6, now she is 11 and these books remain her favorites. She is always begging “Just one more, Grandma” when it is time to turn off the light at bedtime. Now that she is older, she reads to me! I am convinced that these funny and entertaining poems have helped to develop her excellent reading skills. I am eagerly looking forward to surprising her with “Bathing Kitty” this Christmas and all the new giggles this book will generate!

This is a fun, well written book for children of elementary school age. I read at bedtime to a son and daughter with different tastes but this is a book they both want to hear. I've read it twice and we all still laugh. It's a children's book but adults get a kick out of it also.
