The Courting of Miss Macy Rose: Book One

This is a coming-of-age story series set in the Blue Ridge Mountains of West Virginia. The story begins with two high school boys, Jason and JD, who have been best friends since they can remember. It’s 1955, and both Jason and JD are 15 years old. Born during World War Two, they have grown up in the shadows of the impact the war made on the world, their country, their community and their families. Their fathers fought in the war and returned to build their lives as farmers in the Blue Ridge Mountains, where they grew up. Things begin to change when a new girl shows up at their high school one day, and Jason believes he has experienced love at first sight. Her family had just moved to the area, to a farm a few miles across the mountain from where Jason lives. But at age 15 neither of their parents would approve of Jason asking her out on a date. In fact, Macy Rose explains that her father has made a firm rule that she cannot date until she is 17 years old, which is over two years away. Jason is willing to wait, so the story picks up in 1957 as Jason is driving to Macy’s house to take her to a movie and a milkshake he promised her afterwards. Getting to Macy’s house does not go well for Jason, and this is where their adventures begin.

Over time many experiences test their friendships and their confidence in life. Tragedies hit close to home and the young friends learn life lessons about trust, faith, purpose and endurance. Gradually more people become a part of their close-knit mountain community, which functions more like one big family rather than a collection of smaller families. Jason’s intention of courting and eventually marrying Macy Rose will be challenged again and again, leaving us to wonder how their lives will work out. Through it all there are serious life discussions, playfulness among the friends, and lots of humor to keep everyone connected on a positive level.

The close friendship between Jason and JD experiences challenges neither of them expected as other people enter into their lives, into their community and into their hearts. This is a story about many things: the impact of world and American history on the people living through those boomer generation times, along with the human quest for understanding within ourselves and beyond ourselves. It is about friendship, love, and life. It is about navigating life goals and challenges in work, in friendships, dealing with prejudice, and the pursuit of individual identity. It is about enjoying life unashamedly to the fullest and feeling depths of emotion as far as some would dare to take it. It is an exploration of understanding ourselves and others, questioning things we might have taken for granted, and challenging our awareness of reality, of God, and of the purpose of life. It is an evaluation of every strong feeling a people can sense, from fear to grief, and wonder to absolute joy. We share time with Jason and JD as they create their lives, seeing their trust tested, their faith challenged, their love for others awakened, and their individual selves pushed beyond what they ever thought possible.

This story will keep you wondering what is coming next, with tears and laughter woven throughout the pages.
